Communication Arts Magazine 51st Annual Photography competition winner and published in the July / August photo annual issue

Earlier this year I entered a photography competition for the first time.  It is in a magazine called Communication Arts, and this is their 51st annual photography competition.  The magazine, often seen lying around in studios,  is heralded as the most influential publication for art directors and creative directors and has world-wide distribution.

I was incredibly excited and  honored when I got the email a few weeks back announcing that I was selected as one of the winners in the unpublished category of the 2010 competition.  A copy of the magazine containing my winning image arrived at my house while I was at work in the studio so my entire family got to see it before I did :)  I asked my daughter, who had just returned from her first gig as a shooter at a wedding to take a shot of me with the magazine.

Studio Lighting – Digital Workflow & Retouching workshop recap

Last weekend here in Austin Texas, Hananexposures studio hosted the first  Studio lighting  / Digital Workflow & Retouching workshop held with my great friend, photographer & new media design expert in from Brazil, Rodrigo Bressane .

Aimed at beginner to intermediate photographers, the main purpose of the event was that the attendees would take 8-12 months off their journey to better photographs.  This goal had two major components : Studio lighting and Workflow & Retouching.

As part of this hands-on demonstration with the students, we had 2 models Gabriela & Ashley.  Both models were styled by fashion stylist Edith Henry , while their makeup was done by Liliana Espinosa and their hair was styled by Rafael Virguez of Suede Salon – Austin TX.

Gabriela is a signed agency model with Wilhelmina Brown, the Austin office of Wilhelmina models, and Ashley is starting out in her career as a model and is proving to be a complete natural.

In the morning session I covered studio lighting by looking at light & lighting  equipment choices.  At the end of my presentation, we moved into practical demonstrations of studio lighting including teaching a lighting setup which I learned from my dear friend, celebrity, advertising and fashion photographer Jerry Avenaim.

Once we perfected this setup, the attendees began shooting the models and created images they would then use in the afternoon workflow & re-touching session with Rodrigo.

Below are some studio shots I took during the workshop along with some behind the scenes shots of the students in action.

Behind the scenes on Dell Studio One 19 lifestyle shoot…

Are Dell computer products displaying more & more elements of beauty and fashion?  In my opinion–yes. I have been very familiar with their computer products for about 15 years, and one thing I have noticed in the last couple of years is a definite shift in their product designs. In my opinion, in what we are seeing come to market, the physical designs, colors and textures now incorporate more elements of beauty & fashion.

One of the latest products out of the starting gate is the Dell Studio 19. This product went live last week, and now I can show you some behind the scenes images from the lifestyle shoot from early March. :)  Regarding image quality, please understand these snapshots were taken with my iPhone and not my Canon 5D ;)
